Extra-curricular activities are an important part of the total educational experience here at Cape Fear Community College and fulfills the College’s mission by providing a variety of activities that enrich students’ lives. The goal of Student Life is to accommodate student diversity in backgrounds, abilities, interests, and career objectives; enhance academic success; and promote diplomacy, unity, self-discipline, physical and emotional well-being, and develop leadership skills. The social development of the CFCC student is an important phase of the total educational program at Cape Fear Community College. Under the sponsorship of Student Life, social events include concerts, cookouts, holiday celebrations, charity events, tournaments, athletic events, and various other student body activities. Student Life provides services, programs, and facilities for all students, faculty, and staff of the College. The Student Life office is located in the L-Building on the Downtown Campus. Please go to the college’s Student Life webpage for more exciting opportunities here on campus.
Student success at Cape Fear Community College is based on academic excellence. Accordingly, students should attempt to attend all scheduled class and laboratory sessions. Participation in extracurricular activities is also important to the total education and personal development of CFCC students. Occasionally, a student may be required to miss a class session to participate in college-sponsored activities such as Athletics, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK), CFCC Ambassadors, Student Government Association, program conferences and/or competitions, and other activities approved by Student Life.
College officials sponsoring such approved extracurricular activities are expected to provide advance notice to faculty of anticipated absences and the list of students who will be participating. In addition, participating students must also inform their instructors in advance of such anticipated absences and are expected to make advance arrangements for making up all missed assignments. In such cases, class time missed should not be counted absent provided participating students are in good academic standing.
If a faculty member believes that missing class due to a student activity or event is detrimental to the academic success of a specific student, the faculty member may request that the Vice President of Student Services (or his/her designee) review that student’s overall academic and attendance records to determine if the student’s absence warrants exemption from the College’s attendance policy. Students who disagree with the Vice President’s decision may appeal to CFCC’s Judicial Board according to the College’s Grievance Procedure.
