Career Development

Career development services are available through the Academic Advising Center.  Career counselors assist students with career decision-making and choosing a major, including guidance in considering 4-year school transfer options and opportunities.  They also provide information related to employment trends, educational requirements, and important data related to different industries. Job search assistance including resume writing, interview techniques and preparation, as well as other employment readiness planning is also available to students and graduates.  Career events are planned throughout the year to bring employers and students together.  Current job listings are provided through Handshake, CFCC’s online job board.  This resource gives students, graduates, and employers an opportunity to connect with each other through the myCFCC web portal.  For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit our Career Development webpage

Counseling

The Counseling Center can empower you to improve your academic performance, relationships, and general well-being. When admitted to the college, all CFCC curriculum students will have an assigned Counselor who will provide personal support to the student throughout their time at Cape Fear.

Stressors inside and outside of the classroom can affect academic performance, student well-being, and mental health.  CFCC professional Counselors are qualified to address student concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief, and self care.

Confidential counseling services are provided on an ongoing basis to all students at no charge. The Counseling staff also provides educational information and support through campus events, speakers, and handouts that promote mental health awareness and overall well-being.

Counselors are experienced in assisting students in developing skills and attitudes needed to effectively navigate their academic environment.  We encourage you to meet with a Counselor to help make a seamless transition to your role as a college student.  We can help you formulate a plan for academic success and explore soft skills that can improve your GPA; such as time management and college-life balance.

Students who are experiencing academic difficulty are encouraged to meet with a Counselor to develop success strategies. Counselors will work closely with students on academic warning or academic probation to meet satisfactory progress standards toward obtaining their declared degree, diploma, or certificate.

When appropriate, and with the student’s permission, Counselors may make referrals to community resources/agencies to address other holistic concerns and provide wraparound services for student success.

The Counseling staff is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM on both campuses. Summer hours may vary. Students may select an in person, virtual, or phone appointment with a Counselor.  In person appointments at our Burgaw and Surf City satellite sites are available upon request.

If you have questions or need assistance, The Counseling Center can be reached by calling (910) 362-7017 Downtown or (910) 362-7526 at North or by email at counseling@cfcc.edu.

Student Accessibility Services

Cape Fear Community College works to ensure that students with disabilities have equal, effective, and meaningful access to all services through the use of nondiscriminatory policies and procedures, and the provision of reasonable accommodations, auxiliary aids, and services, as indicated necessary by the functional limitations of a qualified disability.

The Student Accessibility Services (SAS) office is the designated office that determines appropriate supports and services for students with disabilities, who are enrolled at Cape Fear Community College.  These determinations are made in compliance with The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and its attachments, and the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended in 2008 (ADAAA).

In order to qualify for services, students must self-disclose & provide appropriate disability documentation to the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) office. Once it has been determined that the documentation submitted satisfies SAS’s documentation requirements, the student will then be required to meet with a SAS staff member, in order to complete the registration process.

SAS provides services that may assist students with disabilities in reaching their academic goals.  Students who have been diagnosed with a disability and who are in need of support and/or services, can initiate the registration process by:  (1) contacting a SAS staff member directly, (2) calling the SAS office’s front office at (910) 362-7017, (3) emailing the general SAS email at sas@cfcc.edu, or (4) visiting the SAS Office in person. Services are available at all CFCC locations, to include the Downtown Campus (Union Station, Suite 218), the North Campus (McKeithan Center), Alston W. Burke Center at Surf City, as well as the Burgaw Center location.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES:  A student with a grievance based on discrimination, an accommodation issue, and/or denial of services based on their disability, should initially file their complaint with the Coordinator of Student Accessibility Services.  If this action does not result in an acceptable resolution of the issue (within the standards of CFCC’s policies and procedures and/or the standards of the class/curriculum) the student should then file their complaint with the Office of the Dean of Students by completing an Online Complaint Form
